Heraklion International Airport, also known as “Nikos Kazantzakis”, is on Crete’s north coast, which is a short 4-5 km drive from Heraklion city. Number two in terms of passenger traffic in Greece, it serves millions of travellers to Crete’s beaches and archaeological sites and into the island’s resorts. The airport has a single terminal which also handles both int’l and domestic flights, thus making it a simpler experience in comparison to other large Greek airports. It may be small, but this airport is well connected with a wide network of European destinations in the summer, which is when Heraklion is a major holiday focus.

The terminal is very much what you would expect, with separate areas for arrivals, departures, security and customs. We have a good range of on-site food options, duty-free stores, lounges and travel info, which in total make the airport very functional and efficient. While at times HER does get very busy during peak season, the airport’s size, signposts and overall atmosphere, which exudes Crete’s warm and welcoming character, do a great job.
